The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the growing presence of an armed group, “Lakurawas,” that has been operating across multiple local government areas, intensifying security concerns in the region. ASP Ahmed Rufai, the command’s spokesperson, disclosed in an interview that this group, armed with sophisticated weapons, has established a foothold in localities such as Gudu, Tangaza, Binji, and Illela, where it is reportedly enforcing its religious beliefs upon local communities.
“These individuals have operated here for several years, heavily armed, and are attempting to impose their religious practices on the local population,” Rufai explained. Interestingly, Rufai added, they are also targeting suspected bandits in these areas, justifying their actions as a crackdown on criminal activities.
Government and Military Response to Growing Security Threat
The activities of the Lakurawas group have raised significant alarm within the Sokoto State Government, which recently highlighted its concerns over the group’s increasing influence. Deputy Governor Idris Gobir publicly addressed the issue during a briefing with Course 33 participants from the National Defence College, Abuja, who were visiting the state as part of a security-focused study tour.
Deputy Governor Gobir expressed concern over the group’s possession of advanced weaponry, noting how their presence has escalated an already challenging security situation in the state, where local authorities continue to confront rising incidents of banditry. “This troubling development arrives at a time when our state is already grappling with widespread banditry, adding new layers to our security challenges,” he stated.
In response, Gobir assured residents that the state government, in cooperation with federal security agencies, is undertaking concerted efforts to safeguard the lives and properties of Sokoto’s communities. Additionally, he expressed hope that the Defence College’s study tour would yield valuable insights into the group’s operations and potentially offer strategic solutions for restoring peace.
National Defence College’s Role and Its Contribution to Regional Security
During the visit, Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, leader of the National Defence College delegation, shared insights into the institution’s mission and ongoing contributions to national security. Established in 1992, the Defence College is Nigeria’s foremost military education institution, training officers from the armed forces, police, and strategic agencies for advanced leadership roles. Since its founding, the college has graduated nearly 3,000 participants, including officers from 30 African and Asian countries.
As the government and security agencies heighten their focus on the Lakurawas, authorities underscore the urgency of addressing the security threat posed by this group. This development highlights ongoing efforts to restore stability, protect communities, and prevent further escalation in Sokoto State amidst a complex and evolving security landscape.
