Hassan Mohammed, an Economics graduate from Kampala University, shared his difficult experiences during a 90-day detention in Kuje Prison after participating in an #EndBadGovernance protest in Kaduna. Mohammed, one of the 39 protesters recently released by the Kaduna State government, recounted the harsh conditions he faced, describing inadequate food provisions that left detainees with “small portions of garri and beans.”

Mohammed explained that he and others were detained on August 5, 2024, during a protest along Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna. After their arrest, they were transferred from the State Criminal Investigation Department to Abuja’s Federal Criminal Investigation Department, where they spent 18 days before being moved to Kuje Prison for an additional 67 days. “It was a bad experience to be in that place because we were not supposed to be there,” he said, reflecting on the conditions and his extended stay.

During a reunion ceremony in Kaduna organized by Governor Uba Sani, who pledged further support for the released protesters, Mohammed urged Nigerian youths to protest peacefully and avoid violence. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sani, and the Nigerian media for their efforts in securing the release of those detained.

In support of the former detainees’ reintegration, the Kaduna State government provided  ₦100,000, new smartphones, and additional assistance, affirming its commitment to helping them rebuild their lives post-detention.
