Chaos ensued in the Super area of Abule-Egba, Lagos, as youths protested the death of a motorist allegedly caused by Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials and police. The deceased was reportedly trying to evade arrest after driving in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane. Eyewitnesses claim that LASTMA officials demanded a bribe before releasing the motorist, who was later struck by another vehicle also attempting to avoid arrest.
Witnesses stated that the motorist, preparing for his upcoming wedding, pleaded to settle the fine for N70,000, but officials allegedly refused. While negotiations were underway, a second vehicle crashed into the stationary car, killing the driver on the spot and injuring his brother.
Enraged protesters blocked the BRT lane with the crashed vehicle, chanting, “No LASTMA, no Police on this road again.” Additional police teams arrived to prevent further unrest, but the protesters continued their demonstration, demanding accountability.
