Remembering Jimmy Carter’s Legacy

In a statement delivered by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu highlighted Carter’s enduring impact on global peace and development.

“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” Tinubu remarked. He noted Carter’s exemplary contributions to addressing challenges in the developing world, particularly his work in combating diseases, mediating conflicts, and promoting democratic values.

“President Carter exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity,” Tinubu said. His life and work, according to the president, serve as a beacon for leaders worldwide to emulate.

Dedication to Global Causes

Carter’s post-presidential years were marked by tireless efforts toward peace, democracy, and public health. His leadership at The Carter Centre led to significant global advancements, including the eradication of Guinea worm disease and river blindness in several countries, notably Nigeria.

“President Carter devoted his post-presidential life to the causes of peace, democracy, and the eradication of tropical diseases. His unwavering commitment to these noble pursuits has left an indelible mark on the world,” Tinubu stated.

A Friend of Nigeria

President Tinubu also reflected on Carter’s personal connection to Nigeria, recalling his historic visit to the country in March 1978. During his three-day stay at the State House in Marina, Lagos, Carter solidified a pragmatic relationship between the United States and Africa, with Nigeria playing a central role.

Tinubu fondly described Carter as a “trustworthy and compassionate friend to Nigeria,” applauding his contributions through The Carter Centre, which positively transformed the lives of many Nigerians.

An Enduring Inspiration

The statement concluded with President Tinubu expressing hope that Carter’s legacy of character, decency, and humanity would continue to inspire leaders across the globe. “President Carter’s legacy reminds us of the true essence of leadership,” Tinubu said, encouraging leaders to prioritize service to humanity both in and out of office.

Jimmy Carter’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings in rural Georgia to becoming a global symbol of peace and compassion serves as a powerful example for all, President Tinubu affirmed.
