In a speech delivered at the 43rd Annual Council of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) in Lagos, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged African leaders to prioritize the blue economy as a key driver for the continent’s sustainable growth. Represented by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, President Tinubu emphasized that Africa’s maritime resources present untapped opportunities for economic development and prosperity across the continent.
Tinubu highlighted the strategic formation of Nigeria’s Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, signifying the government’s commitment to unlocking the sector’s full potential. He noted the importance of regional collaboration in overcoming shared challenges, particularly through interconnected maritime infrastructure and trade.
In addition, President Tinubu stressed the need for technological advancement in port operations, calling for full automation to ensure African ports remain competitive in the global maritime industry. He endorsed the operationalization of the Port Community System, aiming to streamline port activities and support the forthcoming National Single Window initiative.
The Nigerian Ports Authority’s Managing Director, Mohammed Bello Koko, also echoed the president’s message, advocating for regional cooperation to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and eliminate trade barriers. Both leaders praised the PMAWCA’s role in fostering dialogue and cooperation among African nations to maximize the benefits of their maritime resources for economic growth.
