The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 38-year-old man, Destiny Ekhorutomuen, for allegedly using social media to spread false and inciting content aimed at discrediting the police and provoking public discontent. The arrest was carried out by the National Cyber Crime Centre in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State.

Details of the Arrest

In a statement released on Friday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that Ekhorutomuen was apprehended on December 8, 2024. He is accused of operating multiple social media accounts to disseminate falsehoods designed to tarnish the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force and incite public dissatisfaction.

“The suspect allegedly created and operated multiple social media accounts to spread false and inciting content designed to provoke the public against the Nigeria Police,” Adejobi stated.

Concerns Over False Information

The police expressed serious concerns about the deliberate spread of false information, describing it as a threat to national stability, societal cohesion, and public trust.

“This deliberate spread of falsehoods erodes public trust, undermines societal cohesion, and poses significant risks to national security,” the statement read.

Zero Tolerance for Fake News

The police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance towards actions that threaten national stability or undermine the reputation of government institutions. ACP Adejobi warned that using social media to propagate fake news or incite disorder constitutes a criminal offence under Nigerian law.

“The Nigeria Police reiterates its zero tolerance for acts aimed at threatening the nation’s stability or tarnishing the reputation of the police and other government institutions,” he said.

Call for Responsible Use of Social Media

Adejobi urged citizens to exercise caution and responsibility in their use of social media and information.

“Citizens are urged to exercise caution and responsibility in their use of information, as the collective peace and unity of the nation depend on it,” he added.

This incident underscores the growing concern over the misuse of social media platforms to spread fake news and incite unrest. The police have reaffirmed their commitment to addressing these challenges while encouraging Nigerians to promote unity and stability through responsible digital engagement.
