Five suspected hoodlums have been apprehended by the Niger State Police Command following the fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old boy, Saidu Udu, during a gang clash in Minna, the state capital, on Saturday.

The Incident

The clash, involving over 50 hoodlums armed with knives, cutlasses, and daggers, occurred in the Gurgudu area of Maitumbi and Kwari-Berger. The confrontation reportedly stemmed from disagreements over the sharing of Christmas money distributed by benefactors.

An eyewitness, Malik Nurudeen, recounted the chaotic scene: “These ‘area boys’ were always coming here to threaten us, but today, they were more than 50. Initially, we thought they were one group, but it became clear they were two groups arguing over the sharing formula of Christmas money. They began threatening one another with their weapons until one of them stabbed Saidu, and everyone started running.”

Udu was stabbed in the stomach, prompting both groups to go on a rampage, brandishing weapons and creating panic among residents. Shopkeepers hurriedly closed their businesses, and residents fled to avoid violence and potential looting.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Following the incident, the Niger State Police Command launched a swift operation, resulting in the arrest of five suspects. Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the arrests and revealed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved in the clash.

“On 21/12/2024 at about 1130hrs, some miscreants in the Gurgudu area of Maitumbi and Kwari-Berger attacked each other, leading to the death of one Saidu Udu, 15 years, from Gurgudu. The police patrol team moved to the scene, and the miscreants fled. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead. In a follow-up sting operation, five miscreants were arrested and are currently undergoing investigation,” Abiodun stated in a message.

Rising Concern Over Gang Violence

The incident highlights the growing problem of gang violence in Minna. Local gangs, referred to as Yan Daba or “area boys,” have been terrorizing residents, often extorting valuables such as phones, wristwatches, and groceries. Despite increased police patrols, the activities of these gangs have continued unabated, turning parts of the city into areas of constant fear.

Residents expressed frustration over the inability of security agencies to curb the activities of these miscreants. Many feel unsafe, with frequent reports of theft and violent clashes disrupting daily life.

Police Assurance and Community Appeal

In response to the incident, Niger State Commissioner of Police Shawulu Danmamman reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring safety during the Yuletide season. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.

The police have pledged to intensify efforts to arrest the remaining suspects and restore order in the affected areas. Meanwhile, community leaders and residents have called for stronger enforcement measures and proactive strategies to address the root causes of gang violence in Minna.

The tragic death of Saidu Udu serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for coordinated efforts to tackle insecurity and protect vulnerable populations in the state.
