The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, following a tragic stampede at a children’s carnival she organized in Ibadan. The unfortunate incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, claimed the lives of 35 minors and left six others critically injured.

Arrests Made Following the Tragedy

In a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, it was revealed that eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Among those detained are Naomi Silekunola, 31, and Fasasi Abdulahi, 56, the principal of the school where the event took place.

Others arrested include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, with their ages ranging between 25 and 52 years.

The Tragic Stampede

The stampede reportedly occurred during the carnival organized for children, leading to chaos and a mass rush that resulted in the deaths of 35 minors. Six other children were critically injured and are currently receiving medical attention at various healthcare facilities.

“So far, 35 minors have been documented dead while six others are critically injured,” the police statement noted.

The tragic event has left the community in mourning, with many questioning the safety protocols and crowd control measures implemented during the carnival.

The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), with the Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the inquiry.

“The Oyo State Police Command sympathizes with all the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. Justice will be served accordingly,” Osifeso stated.
