Over 1,200 Nigerians Have Died in 2023 Due to Illegal Migration, Reveals Ekiti NIS Comptroller

Abdulrasheed Ademola, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for Ekiti State, disclosed that at least 1,200 Nigerians have lost their lives this year while attempting to migrate illegally to Europe. The revelation came during the NIS’s 60th-anniversary celebration held in Ado-Ekiti, themed “Enhancing Seamless Regular Migration.” Ademola described the prevalence of “Japa Syndrome” as a significant concern for the country, as many Nigerians continue to risk their lives using unauthorized routes in search of better opportunities.

Citing data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Ademola highlighted that the dangers faced by Nigerians attempting to migrate illegally are severe, with numerous fatalities occurring in the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. He noted that even for those who survive these perilous journeys, the outcome often remains grim, as they may face long-term detention in foreign cells, captivity by pirates, or violent encounters, with women especially at risk.

Ademola encouraged safe and legal travel for Nigerians pursuing opportunities abroad, asserting that migration, when properly managed, benefits individuals and the nation alike. He also expressed gratitude to Acting Comptroller General Caroline Wura-ola Adepoju for commemorating the NIS’s six decades of service, noting that the agency has evolved significantly since its inception, advancing from analog to digital processes. The NIS has made substantial strides in areas including travel documentation, border management, and national security, playing a critical role in securing Nigeria’s migration system.
