Police officers in Osun State who allegedly extorted N75,000 from travelers heading to the Osun Osogbo Festival have been arrested and detained by the state police command following intervention by Osun State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon Adewale Egbedun. The officers were apprehended along the Ile-Ogbo axis after the Speaker exposed their actions, which went viral in a video where he demanded the officers return the money to the travelers.
State police spokesperson, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola, stated that the officers involved have been detained since August 10, 2023, and are undergoing disciplinary proceedings, including an orderly room trial. Opalola affirmed that the police command condemns any form of unprofessional conduct, adding that a senior officer involved in the incident has been issued a formal query.
The Commissioner of Police assured Osun residents that indiscipline and unethical behavior would not be tolerated within the state police force. The Speaker had reported the officers to the command after confronting them and demanding the return of the extorted funds.
