The Osun State Park Management System has accused the police of shooting its chairman, Nurudeen Iyanda, popularly known as Alowonle, while he was in custody. The allegation was made in a statement issued by the group’s Secretary, Mukaila Popoola, following Iyanda’s arrest over a domestic issue.
Popoola stated, “Our chairman was shot while in police custody under circumstances that demand a thorough investigation. We urge our members to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their hands. The matter will be pursued through appropriate channels.”
However, the acting Police Public Relations Officer for the Osun Command, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, refuted the claim, asserting that Iyanda was shot while attempting to escape. Giwa-Alade explained that Iyanda had been arrested on Monday, alongside several associates, over allegations of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms, and malicious damage.
According to Giwa-Alade, “A petition accusing Nurudeen Wakili, a.k.a. Alowonle, of these crimes was submitted to the Commissioner of Police and referred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for investigation. Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives moved to Ring Road, Osogbo, where the suspect and his cohorts were reportedly planning to attack the complainant. On sighting the police, the suspects opened fire but were eventually subdued.”
He further detailed that nine suspects, including Iyanda, were initially arrested. However, during their transportation, supporters of Iyanda ambushed the police and forcibly rescued him and four others, all of whom escaped while still handcuffed.
The police later traced Iyanda to a hideout in the Susi area of Oke Baale, Osogbo, where he was rearrested. During the search, authorities reportedly recovered a Barrett pistol, six rounds of 9mm live ammunition, and an expanded empty shell from his vehicle.
Giwa-Alade said, “He made another attempt to escape during the search but was subdued and shot in the process. He is currently receiving treatment and is responding well.”
To prevent escalating tensions, armed soldiers have been deployed to the Ilesa Garage area of Osogbo. Military personnel have temporarily restricted activities at the motor park, halting passenger boarding to maintain order.
The incident has drawn significant attention, with both sides calling for investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and Iyanda’s arrest.
