Tensions flared in Aboh community, Delta State, on Sunday following a violent clash over the conferment of a chieftaincy title. The incident left one person dead and three others injured, sparking unrest in the area.
The Incident
According to community sources, the conflict arose during the traditional procession that follows the conferment of a chieftaincy title. A faction opposing the title’s conferment clashed with hunters escorting the honoree, leading to a deadly confrontation.
“Those opposing the chieftaincy title conferment tried to stop the procession. In the process, shooting started; one person was shot dead, while three others sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital,” a source explained.
Police Confirmation
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, noting that the deceased succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
“It was as a result of two factions in the community,” Edafe explained. “The honoree, as part of the title ceremony, danced around the community but entered the faction opposing him. They attacked him, and the hunters escorting him retaliated.”
Curfew Imposed
In response to the violence, the Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Mr. Vincent Osilonya, imposed a curfew in Aboh from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am.
“We have imposed a curfew while we speak with both factions to sheathe their swords. Nobody should take the law into their own hands,” Osilonya stated.
Background Tensions
The incident comes amid broader tensions in Aboh. The Delta State Government recently presented a staff of office to His Imperial Majesty, Dr. Gregory Nnamdi Oputa III, as the 20th Obi of the kingdom, a move that has faced resistance from certain factions within the community.
Moving Forward
The imposition of the curfew is aimed at restoring calm in the community. Authorities have urged residents to cooperate and refrain from further violence as efforts continue to mediate the dispute.
This clash underscores the need for conflict resolution mechanisms in traditional and communal matters, particularly when longstanding divisions threaten peace and order.
