The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded 98% of the results from the Ondo State Governorship Election on its Result Viewing Portal, signaling the final stages of result collation. With results from 3,875 out of 3,933 polling units transmitted by Saturday night, the election edges closer to determining a winner.
Key Contestants and Voter Participation
The election, involving 17 political parties and over 1.7 million registered voters, was marked by a head-to-head contest between the incumbent Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite a strong security presence, the polls recorded a relatively low voter turnout in many areas.
Security Deployment and Logistics
To ensure smooth conduct, over 22,000 police officers, supported by personnel from other security agencies, were deployed. INEC received commendations for the timely distribution of materials, with voting beginning as scheduled in most polling units. However, isolated delays, particularly in remote areas, were reported.
Allegations of Vote-Buying
The election was marred by widespread vote-buying, with party agents reportedly distributing cash to voters at several locations. In Akure and other parts of the state, voters were offered amounts ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦15,000. Arrests were made, including a suspect found with bags of money intended for voter inducement.
In response, PDP Campaign Director Dr. Eddy Olafeso accused the APC of paying ₦10,000 per voter. The APC denied the allegations, calling for evidence to substantiate the claims. Election observers, including Yiaga Africa, attributed the prevalence of vote-buying to economic hardship and a culture of political corruption.
BVAS and Electoral Concerns
The use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) faced criticism from candidates and voters alike. Agboola Ajayi expressed dissatisfaction with the system, citing delays and inefficiencies. He accused INEC of bias and questioned the transparency of the process.
Collation of Results
Aiyedatiwa emerged victorious at his polling unit, securing 128 votes to Ajayi’s three. Similarly, Ajayi won at his polling unit, polling 194 votes against Aiyedatiwa’s three. The Deputy Governor, Olayide Adelami, also claimed victory at his polling unit with 209 votes.
Law Enforcement Actions
The Police Service Commission (PSC) noted isolated incidents of vote-buying but commended the overall conduct of security personnel. Vehicles and motorcycles were impounded for violating movement restrictions during the election. Affected individuals, including voters, called for leniency, arguing that they were en route to polling units.
Observers’ Remarks
Election observer groups and civil society organizations stressed the need for reforms to curb vote-buying and improve voter education. The PSC reiterated the importance of addressing recurring electoral malpractices to ensure credibility in future elections.
Anticipated Outcome
The conclusion of result collation is expected to provide clarity on the next governor of Ondo State. Both major candidates have expressed optimism, with Aiyedatiwa emphasizing his administration’s achievements and Ajayi highlighting the voters’ desire for change.
INEC’s final announcement is awaited, with Nigerians closely monitoring developments as the state prepares to accept its new leadership.
