The Olubadan-in-Council on Monday condemned as illegal a planned inauguration of the “Iyalode of Oyo State” by a group in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The council, led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, made the declaration following a meeting held in the state capital. In a statement issued by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Gbenga Ayoade, the council emphasized that the title is not recognized under the State Chiefs Law 2000 or the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

“The planned installation of Iyalode of Oyo State is illegal and unknown to law,” the council stated.

The council also called for the suspension of all unsanctioned chieftaincy installations, including one slated for November 28, 2024, at Mapo Hall, to maintain peace in the region.

Proliferation of Titles Criticized

The council expressed concern over the increase in unauthorized chieftaincy titles being created by traders and other groups in the city. It stated that only titles granted with the approval of the Olubadan’s palace would be given formal recognition.

The Olubadan-in-Council underscored that the title of Iyalode is a traditional designation tied to specific towns and requires the endorsement of their traditional ruler. Referring to the Iyalode of Ibadanland, High Chief (Mrs.) Theresa Laduntan Oyekanmi, the council questioned the legitimacy of creating an overarching “Iyalode of Oyo State” title.

“Are they suggesting that the Iyalode of Ibadanland, who waited 42 years to attain her position, should report to someone handpicked by a faceless group?” the council asked rhetorically.

Security Agencies Alerted

The council called on security agencies to intervene by apprehending those behind the proposed installation.

New Mogajis and Baales Installed

Meanwhile, the Olubadan also installed new Mogajis and Baales. The new titleholders were urged to maintain integrity, avoid land grabbing, and refrain from misusing their positions.

Speaking on behalf of the Olubadan, the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Akeem Adewoyin, advised the newly installed chiefs to serve their communities diligently without imposing themselves as overlords.
