An Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has sentenced 22-year-old Jamiu Malomo to death by hanging for the murder of Asisat Akande, an alleged sex worker, in July 2018.
Conviction and Sentence
Justice O. Ogunfowora found Malomo guilty of murder after the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Malomo was convicted on a one-count charge of murder for stabbing Akande to death. The judge ruled that the evidence presented during the trial was substantial and tenable, leading to the conviction.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Ogunfowora said, “You are hereby guilty of killing Asisat Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on you.”
Details of the Crime
During the trial, State Prosecuting Counsel, Mr. A.M. Adebayo, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, explained that the incident occurred on July 18, 2021, around 9:30 p.m. in the Ori-Apata community, Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta. Malomo had picked up Asisat Akande, a sex worker, from the 3AD bar in the Panseke area and brought her to his house for sexual intercourse.
After the act, Akande demanded the agreed payment of N10,000, but Malomo refused to pay the full amount, offering only N8,000. This led to an argument, during which Malomo retrieved a knife from his pocket and stabbed Akande in the neck, causing her immediate death.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Malomo was arrested shortly after the incident at the 3AD club in Panseke, where he was attempting to pick another woman. The prosecution emphasized that Malomo’s actions contravened the provisions of Section 316 of the Criminal Code, punishable under Section 319 of the Ogun State Criminal Code, 2006.
The court’s decision marks the culmination of the trial, with Malomo now facing the ultimate penalty for his crime.
