The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation following the discovery of the swollen body of 45-year-old Tolulope Olusanya in her apartment late Monday night. The Kemta Divisional Police raised the alarm after being alerted by the landlord, who had not seen Olusanya for several days.
Disturbing Discovery
According to the police, the landlord, identified as Adebesin Adebayo, became concerned when Olusanya was not seen around Shittu Street, Madojutimi Abiola Way, Abeokuta. After noticing a foul odour emanating from her locked apartment, Adebayo reported the situation to the Kemta Divisional Police station at approximately 8:15 PM on Monday.
The Ogun State Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the discovery. She explained that upon arrival at the scene, officers found the apartment locked from the inside, with the unpleasant odour persisting through the windows.
“The officers forced their way into the apartment and discovered Olusanya’s body lying on the bed, swollen and emitting a strong stench, suggesting she had been deceased for some time,” Odutola stated.
Investigation and Challenges
Efforts to transport the body to a hospital were hindered by a lack of medical equipment to prevent potential infection. Authorities also faced difficulties in contacting Olusanya’s family or immediate relatives. Odutola noted that the local health authority had been involved but with limited success in resolving the situation.
“The scene has been secured, and the area has been cordoned off while detectives continue their investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death,” she added.
Potential Suicide and Past Incidents
While the cause of death is yet to be determined, initial indications suggest a possible suicide, though other angles are being explored. This case adds to a troubling pattern in the area. On November 27, 2024, a man named Fatai Hamzat was discovered dead in his apartment on Oremeji Street, Ijeun Tuntun, Abeokuta. Hamzat’s neighbor found his body hanging from a ceiling fan after repeated knocks on his door went unanswered.
Community Concerns
These incidents have raised concerns among residents about mental health and the importance of neighborly vigilance. Police and local health authorities are urging the community to report suspicious behavior or signs of distress to prevent further tragedies.
Next Steps
The Ogun State Police Command has assured the public of a thorough investigation into Olusanya’s death. Authorities are working to contact her family and determine the exact circumstances that led to her demise. Meanwhile, they encourage residents to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with mental health issues, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and community support.
