The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Ogun State expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Tuesday for implementing a long-overdue wage increase for pensioners across all categories. In an official letter titled “New Wage Increase to Ogun Pensioners: Expression of Gratitude,” signed by State Chairman Comrade Waidi Oloyede, Secretary Comrade Bola Lawal, and Treasurer Comrade O. Ogabi, the union praised the governor’s support for retirees.

The union highlighted that the state government began disbursing the N20,000 wage increase in October 2024, marking the first significant increase in 16 years. Prior to this, pension increases had been sporadic, with no comprehensive adjustments across all pension categories.

“Your Excellency, we cannot overlook the many generous measures from your administration,” the letter stated, pointing to the prompt payment of monthly pensions, consistent release of accrued gratuities, and additional financial support aimed at easing the impact of fuel subsidy removal. The union conveyed their appreciation for Governor Abiodun’s “sincerity of purpose, love, and respect” toward Ogun’s elderly retirees.

However, the union also appealed for further support, urging the governor to consider a consequential review for long-standing pensioners in accordance with the Federal Government’s Circular on the Consequential Adjustment of Pensions for those who retired before the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2019.

The NUP’s letter underscores both gratitude and a call for continued attention to pension reforms, advocating for adjustments that will sustain the welfare of Ogun’s retirees in alignment with federal guidelines.
