A nurse identified as Chiemela Nonye has accused Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Nkiruka Ugwu, attached to Area ‘M’ Command, Idimu, Lagos, of coercing her into giving false testimony in a rape case. Nonye further alleged that CSP Ugwu is now threatening her life to prevent her from implicating the officer during an ongoing investigation at Area ‘D’ Command, Mushin.
Allegations Against CSP Ugwu
Nonye claimed that she was paid an undisclosed sum by CSP Ugwu to falsely testify against Ekwenyu Uchenna, who had been accused of defiling three teenage siblings in April 2024. Uchenna and the mother of the minors were arrested and subjected to prolonged detentions—seven days at the Alausa Police Division and an additional three weeks at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja.
After a thorough investigation by detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, Uchenna was released due to lack of evidence. Following his release, Uchenna filed a petition against Nonye at the Area D Command, Mushin. During interrogation, Nonye reportedly admitted in a written statement that CSP Ugwu had coerced her into fabricating the allegations.
Leaked Telephone Conversation
In a recorded conversation between Nonye and the mother of the minors, Nonye was heard apologizing and pleading for forgiveness, acknowledging that CSP Ugwu had pushed her into framing Uchenna.
- Nonye: “I don’t know why I agreed to this. Please forgive me. I didn’t know why I agreed to frame Uchenna.”
- Mother of the Minors: “I know you were pushed into this. CSP Ugwu is the real problem. She made you do this.”
CSP Ugwu’s Response
When contacted for her side of the story, CSP Ugwu denied any involvement and dismissed Nonye’s allegations as baseless. She stated, “I told her never to involve my name. She cannot try to mention my name. I am ready for her.”
Further Allegations Against CSP Ugwu
The mother of the minors also accused CSP Ugwu of threatening her life and destroying her business. She alleged that the officer seized goods from her shop in Cele-Egbe and instructed local touts to kill her if she attempted to reopen the shop.
Background of the Case
The case began with allegations that Uchenna and the mother of the minors conspired to commit rape. However, after extensive investigations by multiple police units, no evidence of penetration or conspiracy was found. This led to Uchenna’s release and the subsequent petition that unveiled the alleged coercion and false testimony orchestrated by CSP Ugwu.
Ongoing Investigation
The Osun State Police Command is investigating the case, focusing on Nonye’s allegations against CSP Ugwu and the circumstances surrounding the false testimony.
Public Outcry
The incident has sparked discussions about abuse of power within law enforcement and the need for thorough investigations to ensure justice for all parties involved. Further updates on the case are awaited as investigations continue.
