Call to Embrace AI in Engineering and Entrepreneurship
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping Nigeria’s engineering and entrepreneurial landscape. Speaking at an induction ceremony held in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos, NSE Lagos Branch Chairman, Kesha Olukorede, encouraged the 507 inductees to apply their knowledge and skills in AI to address challenges in sectors such as security, engineering, and infrastructure development.
Olukorede stressed the urgency of adopting AI, stating, “You are either jumping on the train or being left behind. The world is not waiting, and Nigeria cannot afford to lag. Graduates should adopt a forward-thinking mindset, leveraging technology to drive progress and create solutions for the nation’s challenges.”
AI as a Driver of Innovation
Guest speaker and Managing Director of Kresta Laurel Ltd., Dideolu Falobi, described AI as a revolutionary force capable of equipping machines to perform human-like tasks. He highlighted its importance in engineering fields such as construction, road management, and other infrastructure-related areas.
“AI basics must be integrated into any educational pursuit. It’s not just about knowing; it’s about deploying AI effectively across diverse sectors to solve problems and drive development,” Falobi explained, advocating for its inclusion in educational curriculums.
AI and Job Market Evolution
Addressing concerns about job losses due to AI, Falobi dismissed fears, asserting that AI will create new opportunities rather than eliminate jobs. “Every new revolution brings innovation and opens new doors. The same will happen with AI, as it comes with opportunities we cannot yet fully imagine,” he noted.
Drawing examples from the ICT and social media sectors, Falobi highlighted how technological revolutions have consistently generated new industries and job opportunities.
Preparing for an AI-Driven Future
Falobi advised graduates to prioritize continuous learning and skill acquisition to remain relevant in an evolving job market. He emphasized that AI presents immense opportunities for addressing national challenges, including infrastructure development, resource management, and problem-solving.
Professional Ethics and National Development
Representing NSE President Margaret Oguntala, former Lagos Branch Chairman Ayotunde Ogunnaike congratulated the inductees and urged them to uphold professional ethics. Ogunnaike highlighted the importance of NSE membership in fostering professional growth and contributing to Nigeria’s national development.
Key Takeaways for Graduates
- AI as a Priority: Understanding and deploying AI is critical for driving progress in engineering and entrepreneurship.
- Continuous Learning: Graduates must embrace lifelong learning to adapt to technological advancements.
- Ethics and Responsibility: Engineers should uphold high ethical standards to contribute meaningfully to society.
- Opportunities in AI: While AI may reshape the job market, it offers new opportunities for innovation and problem-solving.
Conclusion
The event underscored the need for Nigeria’s engineering graduates to embrace AI as a tool for innovation and development. By leveraging AI, they can contribute to solving national challenges, driving technological progress, and securing a competitive edge in an increasingly digital world.
