In a renewed effort to tackle criminal activities in Nigeria’s coastal and territorial waters, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has entered into a partnership with the International Police Organization (INTERPOL). This collaboration aims to sustain the recent decline in maritime crimes and further secure the nation’s waters.
During a visit by INTERPOL officials to NIMASA’s Lagos headquarters, NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, emphasized the importance of ensuring safety on African waters, noting that trade can only flourish in a secure environment. Peterside expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to significantly improve the security of regional waters.
While specific details of the discussions were not fully disclosed, sources indicate that a Memorandum of Understanding may be in the works. NIMASA spokesman, Mr. Isichei Osamgbi, confirmed that the meeting focused on enhancing the ongoing collaboration between NIMASA and INTERPOL to further combat maritime crime.
