According to a statement released on Thursday by Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre for Operation Fansan Yamma, the operation resulted in the neutralization of six terrorists and the recovery of significant weaponry.

- Four AK-47 rifles
- 160 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition
- One box of 12.7mm ammunition
Despite the success, the operation came at a heavy cost, with five soldiers tragically losing their lives.
Military Appeal for Public Cooperation
In response to the operation, the military has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in Gudu LGA and surrounding areas. The statement emphasized the importance of public cooperation in maintaining security and protecting lives.
“The military calls on the public to report any suspicious activities related to terrorism or security threats in the Gudu LGA and surrounding areas. Public cooperation is essential to safeguard lives and maintain peace in our communities,” the statement read.
Background on the Lakurawa Sect
The Lakurawa sect has become a significant security concern in Sokoto and Kebbi states. Originally emerging around 2016 or 2017 in Sokoto State, the group began as a self-defense militia organized by local leaders to combat rising banditry.
Over time, the sect evolved into a radical faction, imposing strict religious laws and expanding its control over communities. Their influence has spread into neighboring Kebbi State, where they have engaged in violent activities, including:
- A deadly attack in November 2024 on Mera village, Augie Local Government Area, which resulted in multiple deaths and cattle rustling.
Links to International Extremist Groups
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has identified Lakurawa as a terrorist group with affiliations to extremist elements from Mali and Niger. Their presence has exacerbated insecurity in the northwestern region of Nigeria, complicating efforts to restore peace and stability.
Moving Forward
The successful operation in Gudu LGA demonstrates the military’s commitment to tackling terrorism in the region. However, the evolving nature of groups like Lakurawa highlights the need for sustained counter-terrorism efforts and regional cooperation to address cross-border threats.
As the military continues its offensive against these groups, public support and vigilance remain critical in the fight against terrorism and the protection of communities in the northwest.
