The Presidency has reiterated its commitment to the welfare and academic development of Nigerian students as they join peers globally to mark the 2023 International Students’ Day. Hon. Sunday Asefon, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, emphasized that student welfare remains a key priority for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking on the administration’s educational initiatives, Asefon noted significant strides, including the Education Loan Act, approval of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for Student Union bodies, and directives to prevent federal institutions from increasing tuition fees. Additionally, he highlighted the strategic appointment of seasoned scholar Prof. Tahir Mamman as Education Minister and the selection of young leaders to manage youth-focused ministries.
These steps, Asefon stated, underscore the administration’s commitment to not just promise change but implement impactful policies. As part of this commitment, he announced the upcoming “Renewed Hope Academic Excellence Reward Scheme” designed to reward top-performing graduates from every tertiary institution across Nigeria annually. This initiative will aim to inspire academic excellence and promote a culture of achievement within Nigeria’s student community, with more details to follow soon.
In his message, Asefon urged students and student leaders to maintain peace on campuses as the government works towards fulfilling its “Renewed Hope” agenda, which prioritizes education, inclusion, and a conducive learning environment for all Nigerian students.
