Investigation into Betting Patterns
Nigerian and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is under investigation by the Udine Public Prosecutor’s Office over suspicious betting patterns surrounding a yellow card he received during a Serie A match against Lazio in March 2024. If found guilty, the 25-year-old Super Eagles star could face a four-year ban from football.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, betting agency Sisal flagged unusual gambling activities detected through their algorithms, involving an abnormal volume of bets placed on Okoye being cautioned during the match. Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting in the 64th minute of Udinese’s 2-1 victory, prompting the probe.
Connection to Pizzeria Owner
The investigation also involves Diego Giordano, a 40-year-old pizzeria owner in Udine. Prosecutors allege that a verbal agreement about the bet was made at Giordano’s Biffi Pizzeria, which was later executed at a Sisal betting outlet days before the game.
Following Sisal’s report, investigators conducted searches at both Okoye’s residence and Giordano’s property to gather evidence.
Okoye’s Legal Team Responds
Okoye’s legal representatives have dismissed the allegations as baseless, arguing that the claims lack substantial evidence.
Possible Consequences
Under Article 24 of the Italian Code of Sports Justice, professional footballers are strictly prohibited from betting on official events organized by FIGC, UEFA, or FIFA. If found guilty, Okoye could face a ban ranging from seven months to four years, depending on the severity of any proven offenses.
Impact on Okoye’s Career
The investigation comes at a difficult time for Okoye, who is currently sidelined after undergoing wrist surgery. Udinese have already signed Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik as cover during his recovery.
Since joining Udinese in 2023 after a challenging stint at Watford, Okoye has made 37 appearances across all competitions, becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper before his injury.
What’s Next?
The case is expected to be concluded in the coming weeks. The outcome could significantly impact Okoye’s career and reputation, depending on the findings of the investigation.
This situation adds to the challenges faced by players in maintaining professional conduct while adhering to strict regulations governing sports integrity. Football authorities and fans alike will be watching closely as the case unfolds.
