Nigeria Customs Service Mourns Tragic Loss of Superintendent Kabiru Tijani and Family in Osun Fire Incident

The Nigeria Customs Service is grieving the devastating loss of Superintendent of Customs Kabiru Tijani, his wife, and their four children, who tragically perished in a fire at their residence in Ede, Osun State. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 2, 2024, at around 3 am, engulfing their home and claiming the lives of the entire family.

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, by the Oyo/Osun Area Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Customs Kayode Wey, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss.

“The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, deeply mourns the untimely demise of SC Kabiru Tijani, his beloved wife, and their four children. SC Kabiru’s dedication to duty, particularly in leading anti-smuggling operations, was instrumental in the Command’s successes,” the statement read.

Comptroller Oramalugo praised Tijani’s commitment and leadership, describing him as a fearless officer whose work ethic and dedication were unparalleled.

“SC Kabiru was not just an officer; he was a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope in our fight against smuggling. His leadership earned him the admiration and respect of his peers and subordinates alike,” Oramalugo added.

The statement also highlighted the contributions of Tijani’s wife, who was an active member of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Oyo/Osun Chapter.

“Her dedication to the welfare of officers’ families was exemplary. She offered unwavering support and encouragement to others, playing a crucial role in the Customs community,” the statement noted.

While acknowledging the circulating speculations regarding the fire’s cause, the Command urged patience as investigations are ongoing.

“We appeal to the public to disregard unverified reports about the incident. Our focus is on supporting the bereaved family and the lone child survivor, while ensuring a thorough investigation into this heartbreaking tragedy,” the statement emphasized.

The Customs community, deeply affected by the loss, has since conducted the burial of SC Kabiru Tijani and his family according to Islamic rites.

Comptroller Oramalugo extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the officers and men of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, expressing the collective grief of the Customs family.

“We are devastated by this loss. SC Kabiru and his family were cherished members of our community. Their absence will leave a deep void, but their legacy of service and integrity will forever be remembered,” he said.

Amidst the mourning, officers and colleagues have shared memories of Tijani’s kindness and dedication, describing him as a mentor and role model.

The Command assured that the welfare of the lone child survivor, who escaped the tragedy, remains a top priority. The child is currently receiving care and support from the Customs community, with efforts underway to provide for their long-term well-being.

“We will continue to honor SC Kabiru Tijani’s legacy by upholding the values he lived by—service, dedication, and integrity,” Oramalugo concluded.
