The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has officially moved its headquarters to a newly constructed facility in the Jahi area of Abuja. The relocation marks a significant milestone for the agency, which has been grappling with space constraints at its previous headquarters in the Gimbiya area of Garki, Abuja.

The first phase of the project was inaugurated during an interdenominational service held on Wednesday, with full completion anticipated under the 2025 budgetary provisions. This was disclosed in a statement by NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.

Speaking at the inauguration, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (rtd), described the move as an essential step in accommodating the agency’s expansion and improving operational efficiency.

Marwa highlighted the necessity of the relocation, stating:

“I’m glad we have finally moved into this facility after initial budgetary constraints. Although this is the first phase, it is sufficiently functional for us to relocate. Our old headquarters could no longer accommodate the expanded workforce, necessitating the posting of officers elsewhere due to lack of space. This consolidation will enhance coordination and effectiveness.”

He added that the old headquarters would continue to function as an annex, while the new facility would serve as the central hub for the agency’s operations. Marwa also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support, as well as to international partners and other stakeholders for their contributions toward the agency’s mission to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse.

“The support we receive from President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and our international partners is both a recognition of our efforts and a motivation to achieve even more. I believe this new work environment will inspire staff to surpass their previous accomplishments,” Marwa remarked.

The NDLEA Secretary, Shadrach Haruna, commended Marwa’s transformative leadership, which he credited with elevating the agency to global standards. Haruna outlined significant achievements since 2021, including an increase in staff strength from 5,000 to 15,000, the payment of outstanding allowances, promotions, and the amendment of the agency’s enabling law by the National Assembly.

The inauguration ceremony concluded with Christian and Islamic prayers for President Tinubu and Nigeria, along with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
