The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, has intensified its fight against illicit drug activities, recording significant milestones in 2024. Among its recent successes is the destruction of a six-hectare farmland used for cultivating Indian hemp in Alaka Village, Ogun State.

The state commandant, Mr. Tijani Rabe, disclosed this during a press conference held in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Thursday. The event served as an opportunity for the agency to present its 2024 scorecard and highlight its achievements in the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes.

Six-Hectare Hemp Farmland Destroyed

Mr. Rabe revealed that the NDLEA uncovered the massive hemp plantation during a targeted operation in Alaka Village. The farm was completely destroyed, and four individuals were apprehended on-site. The suspects are currently under investigation for their alleged roles in the cultivation and distribution of the banned substance.

“This operation is a testament to the NDLEA’s commitment to eradicating drug cultivation and trafficking in Ogun State. The six-hectare farmland has been destroyed, and those arrested are assisting us with further investigations,” Rabe said.

Arrests and Seizures Highlight a Productive Year

In addition to the destruction of the farmland, the NDLEA Ogun Command recorded a series of successes throughout the year. According to Rabe, the agency arrested 675 individuals involved in drug-related crimes and seized 9.7 tons of illicit drugs, along with 537.81 liters of liquid-based substances.

One of the most notable operations, codenamed “Operation Closed Gates,” was carried out in November. During this special initiative, the agency intercepted 100 bags of cannabis weighing 1.3 tons. The operation was part of the agency’s Yuletide strategy to disrupt drug syndicates and seal off entry points for illicit drugs into Ogun State.

“Operation Closed Gates has been a resounding success, targeting drug merchants and syndicates while effectively sealing all major roads into the state,” Rabe stated.

Advocacy and Community Sensitization Efforts

The NDLEA Ogun Command has not only focused on enforcement but also emphasized preventive measures through community outreach and education. In 2024, the agency conducted 128 sensitization programs in schools, workplaces, and local communities. These initiatives aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage early intervention.

“These programs reached approximately 27,648 people, equipping them with the knowledge to combat drug abuse and fostering a culture of prevention,” Rabe noted. He emphasized the importance of continuous advocacy as a critical component of the agency’s overall strategy.

Legal Actions and Convictions

In addition to its enforcement and advocacy efforts, the NDLEA Ogun Command achieved significant progress in the legal prosecution of drug offenders. Rabe reported that the agency secured 221 convictions in 2024, with offenders sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. Numerous other cases are currently at different stages of prosecution, further showcasing the agency’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

“Securing these convictions serves as a strong deterrent to would-be offenders. It also reinforces public confidence in the justice system’s ability to address drug-related crimes effectively,” Rabe added.

The Fight Against Drug Cultivation Continues

The NDLEA Ogun Command’s recent successes underscore the scale of the drug problem in the region and the agency’s unwavering determination to address it. This is not the first time large-scale drug cultivation has been uncovered in the state. In 2022, the Ogun State Police Command discovered a similar large expanse of land used for growing Indian hemp and arrested seven suspects.

The recurrent nature of such discoveries highlights the need for sustained vigilance and coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies, local communities, and stakeholders.

Looking Ahead: A Call for Collaboration

As the NDLEA continues its crackdown on drug offenders, Rabe called for increased collaboration between the agency and the public. He emphasized that community involvement is crucial for identifying and dismantling drug syndicates while preventing the cultivation and distribution of illicit substances.

“The fight against drugs is a collective responsibility. We urge all stakeholders to work with us in safeguarding our communities and ensuring a drug-free society,” Rabe concluded.

Building Momentum for a Safer Future

The NDLEA Ogun Command’s achievements in 2024 reflect its proactive approach to combating drug-related crimes and promoting public health. From large-scale raids and arrests to extensive community sensitization efforts, the agency has set a high standard in the fight against drugs. As the year comes to a close, the NDLEA remains committed to building on its successes and fostering a safer and healthier environment for all Nigerians.
