MultiChoice has urged industry operators to come together in a consolidated effort against piracy, emphasizing the harmful impact of content theft on the creative sector. This message was delivered during a recent anti-piracy roundtable titled “Piracy Untells Our Stories,” which aimed to foster collaboration among key players, develop strategic responses, and provide solutions to the growing problem of piracy.
At the event, Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice West Africa, stressed the critical need for joint action. “As we continue to evolve within the digital content distribution space, combating piracy requires a collective stance,” she said. Dr. Tejumola highlighted that piracy not only undercuts the value of a producer’s work but threatens the entire industry’s sustainability. She encouraged stakeholders to contribute actively to the fight against piracy, expressing hope that coordinated efforts could lead to a robust and enduring creative industry.
The discussion also featured insights from industry professionals, including the President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, Victor Okhai, who underscored the need for clearer communication on the issue. Okhai noted that one of the challenges in combating piracy is the disconnect between the messaging of anti-piracy efforts and public understanding. “The Nigerian Copyright Commission and related bodies must tailor their messages to resonate with everyday people,” Okhai suggested, indicating that bridging this gap could improve public support for anti-piracy measures.
Additionally, Obafemi Agaba, a legal expert in intellectual property, stressed the importance of funding for the Nigerian Copyright Commission to bolster its enforcement capabilities. Agaba urged MultiChoice and other stakeholders to advocate for better financial support for the commission, as this would enhance the agency’s ability to pursue and penalize piracy offenders effectively.
The event concluded with a shared commitment from all participants to address piracy through strategic collaboration, education, and enhanced enforcement, aiming to preserve and promote the future of Nigeria’s creative industry.
