Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), operating under Sector 4 in Diffa, Republic of Niger, have intercepted 174 able-bodied Nigerian men attempting to cross into border communities in Niger. The group was stopped in Gueskeru, a key border town linking Yobe State in Nigeria to the Republic of Niger.
According to a statement by MNJTF spokesperson Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the men claimed they were traveling from various towns in Nigeria to the Lake Chad region for fishing. However, their movement raised concerns due to the porous nature of the borders, which have become havens for terrorist groups. Among these groups is the Lakurawa faction, known for numerous attacks on border communities.
The sudden appearance of such a large number of men near a region plagued by terrorist activity set off security alarms. Authorities feared that granting access to these individuals without proper checks could pose significant risks to the stability of the region.
In response, Sector 4 troops halted the group’s journey and initiated a thorough profiling and interrogation process to determine their intentions and ensure they do not threaten regional security.
The MNJTF, which is dedicated to counterterrorism and maintaining regional peace, emphasized the need for increased border vigilance and collaboration among member states. The force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians, dismantling terrorist networks, and ensuring stability across the Lake Chad Basin.
This interception underscores the ongoing challenges of cross-border security in areas affected by terrorism and highlights the importance of coordinated efforts to address such threats effectively.
