In an area already reeling from the consequences of massive fires, a new wildfire broke out north of Los Angeles on Wednesday, growing in size and prompting evacuation orders.

Near Castaic Lake, ferocious flames were consuming hillsides, quickly engulfing 3,400 acres (1,400 hectares) in less than two hours.

Strong, dry Santa Ana winds were rushing over the area, sending a thick veil of smoke and embers ahead of the flames, igniting the fire.

Around the lake, which is about 35 miles north of Los Angeles, and near the city of Santa Clarita, evacuation orders were issued.

While packing his car, one man told broadcaster KTLA, “I’m just praying that our house doesn’t burn down.”

Police were seen driving around the neighborhood on television, telling residents to leave.

After massive fires tore through parts of Los Angeles, killing over two dozen people and destroyed 12,000 structures, Southern California is on edge.
