A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Eziezekwe village, Abagana, Anambra State, when a middle-aged man, identified as Nwana, set his wife, Chioma Nwana, ablaze following a heated altercation over suspected infidelity.
The Confrontation and Tragic Outcome
The altercation began when Chioma returned home after an alleged outing with another man. Nwana confronted her, accusing her of infidelity. The argument quickly escalated, with the suspect reportedly dousing his wife with petrol and setting her on fire. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Chioma, who sustained severe burns, succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday morning.
Community Reaction and Police Action
Residents of the area, who spoke anonymously, described the harrowing scene. “The woman returned home on Tuesday evening, and her husband accused her of infidelity. During the confrontation, he poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. She was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately passed away this morning,” said one local.
The couple, who had six children, had been living together in the village before the tragic incident. Following the act, Nwana reportedly presented himself at the Abagana Divisional Police Station and confessed to the crime.
Police Investigation
Confirming the incident, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, stated that the suspect is currently in police custody. “Unfortunately, the victim died this morning. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the transfer of the case to the Homicide Unit for a thorough investigation,” Ikenga added.
The tragic death of Chioma Nwana has left the community in shock, and the investigation is ongoing.
