The city of Lagos is buzzing with excitement as preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated 2023 Olokun Festival, which will be graced by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. The Chief Host and Convener of the event, Ambassador Yeye Lara Fashola, has emphasized that this year’s festival will highlight the importance of entertainment as a vital tool for preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
Scheduled for August 26, 2023, the Olokun Festival promises to be an extraordinary celebration, beginning with prayers and propitiations aimed at fostering economic growth and wealth. The event will delve into the spiritual and historical significance of Olokun, a revered deity in Yoruba mythology, known as the goddess of wealth, fertility, and the sea.
Speaking to newsmen, Ambassador Fashola noted that this year’s festival, themed “Entertainment is Culture,” underscores the deep connection between the arts—such as music, dance, and storytelling—and Yoruba traditions. She stressed that these elements have played a pivotal role in passing down the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people through generations.
