A yet-to-be-identified man has been sentenced to four months in prison for vandalizing public infrastructure in Lagos. The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) apprehended the individual on Jibowu Bridge for attempting to remove screws and nuts critical to the bridge’s structural integrity.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed the details on Wednesday, explaining that the suspect was promptly arraigned at the Oshodi Magistrate Court, where he received his sentence. Wahab, in a post on X, emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance policy for acts of vandalism.
He stated:
“The Lagos State Government, through its enforcement agencies, remains committed to safeguarding public infrastructure. Acts of vandalism not only endanger lives but also undermine the collective progress of the state.”
Wahab also warned potential offenders that the state is prepared to enforce stringent penalties against those seeking to sabotage public assets, as such actions compromise safety and hinder development.
The incident follows a similar case in September when Lagos Police arrested Yakubu Yusuf for vandalizing railings on the Third Mainland Bridge. Yusuf was apprehended near the Old School of Nursing area after police received reports of vandalism in the vicinity.
These efforts underscore Lagos State’s commitment to maintaining its infrastructure and ensuring public safety, with a clear message that acts of sabotage will be met with the full force of the law.
