The Kebbi State Police Command has apprehended two suspects in connection with distinct murder incidents that occurred in the Shanga and Zuru Local Government Areas. These tragic events have raised concerns over escalating violence and prompted calls for peaceful conflict resolution within the community.
Murder in Shanga Local Government Area
On December 31, 2024, around 8:00 PM, police officers arrested Yunusa Haruna, a 25-year-old resident of Bakin Turu village in Shanga Local Government Area, for allegedly killing his elder brother, Isiyaku Haruna. According to a statement from CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the command’s spokesperson, the fatal incident arose from a heated argument between the siblings.
“The suspect used a sharp knife to stab his elder brother, resulting in his death. Officers from the Shanga Divisional Police Headquarters responded swiftly to the scene and apprehended the suspect,” Abubakar noted.
Fatal Dispute in Zuru Local Government Area
In a separate incident on January 8, 2025, at approximately 4:30 PM, Abubakar Umar, 25, of Jarkasa in Zuru Local Government Area, reportedly attacked and killed Mohammed Bala by stabbing him in the head with a knife during a disagreement. Umar also allegedly injured Mohammed’s younger brother, Sama’ila Bala, during the altercation. Following prompt action by officers from the Zuru Divisional Police Headquarters, the suspect was immediately taken into custody.
Police Response and Investigation
Reacting to the incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, expressed grave concern over the rise in violent disputes and condemned the unnecessary loss of lives. He appealed to the residents of Kebbi State to resolve conflicts peacefully and report grievances to appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence.
The Commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding both cases. Once investigations are concluded, the suspects will face prosecution in court.
Commitment to Community Safety
The Kebbi State Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring peace and security across the state. The command also emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging residents to provide credible information that could aid security efforts.
“These unfortunate incidents underscore the need for community members to adopt non-violent methods of resolving disputes. The police remain steadfast in maintaining law and order and will not tolerate acts of violence,” the Commissioner stated.
The command’s proactive approach and timely interventions aim to reinforce its role as a guardian of public safety and a promoter of harmonious coexistence in Kebbi State.
