The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced an additional $668,000 in funding through the Rapid Response Fund (RRF) to bolster emergency humanitarian efforts for flood-affected communities in Nigeria. This allocation aims to support localised relief operations in Jigawa, Katsina, and Bauchi States, where thousands of residents are grappling with the devastating impacts of ongoing floods.
Paola Pace, IOM Nigeria’s Chief of Mission ad interim, disclosed the development in a press statement on Thursday, highlighting the critical need for immediate intervention.
The funding, made possible through contributions from USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, will be directed to IOM’s local partners, including Relief Rescue Initiative, Safer World Foundation, and the Community Engagement and Social Development Initiative. These organisations will focus on delivering essential aid such as emergency shelters, clean water, sanitation facilities, protection services, and multi-purpose cash assistance to over 228,777 affected individuals.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance for making this response possible. Their support is vital in enabling IOM and local partners to provide life-saving assistance and help communities rebuild and recover from the catastrophic impacts of the floods,” the statement read.
This latest funding follows an earlier allocation of $1.8 million by IOM in October to nine local and international NGOs for emergency flood response. With this second installment, IOM’s total funding for flood relief efforts in Nigeria in 2024 exceeds $2.4 million.
The organisation emphasised its commitment to close collaboration with government agencies, local authorities, and other humanitarian partners to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive response to the disaster.
“These interventions are designed not only to address the immediate needs of flood-affected communities but also to promote their recovery and resilience,” IOM stated.
Efforts are ongoing to provide timely and impactful assistance as Nigeria continues to face severe flooding challenges during the rainy season.
