Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has expressed confidence in a smooth and successful governorship election in Ondo State scheduled for November 16. During a visit to the INEC state headquarters in Akure, the state capital, Yakubu outlined improvements in logistics and result management, drawing from lessons learned in the recent Edo State governorship election and previous polls.

Highlighting INEC’s focus on addressing key challenges, Yakubu emphasized, “There are two main challenges: logistics for election day to ensure polling units open promptly, and effective result management. My assurance to voters in Ondo State is that they will witness significant improvements in these processes.”

The INEC chairman’s visit aimed to assess the preparedness of the Ondo State office ahead of the election. Although Yakubu reported receiving favorable updates from the state office, he stressed the importance of conducting an in-person readiness assessment. “We are here to observe the preparations, the positive efforts by our state office, and to ensure we’re ready for the election,” he said.

In preparation for the election, Yakubu announced plans to engage with various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, media representatives, and security agencies. Additionally, INEC staff will undergo assessments to ensure comprehensive readiness. As part of the preparatory activities, INEC will conduct a mock accreditation of voters across 16 polling units in six local government areas spanning the three senatorial zones of Ondo State.

Looking ahead, Yakubu also mentioned a stakeholder meeting scheduled for Thursday, where the National Peace Committee will invite all relevant parties to sign a national peace accord. This measure aims to promote a peaceful election atmosphere and reinforce commitments to maintaining order throughout the electoral process.

Yakubu’s visit underscores INEC’s commitment to refining election processes and ensuring a transparent and efficient election in Ondo State, bolstered by recent operational insights and enhanced collaboration with key stakeholders.
