The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old businesswoman, Edith Nwachukwu, for allegedly battering her 13-year-old house help, Kelechi Ejieke. The suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday evening after the minor was rescued from her at Relief Market in Owerri, the state capital.
Details of the Incident
Chidiebube Okeoma, a journalist and activist, played a key role in exposing the abuse. Okeoma, who is also the founder of the Stand for Humanity Foundation, was alerted by market traders to the situation. The businesswoman had accused the minor of stealing money, a claim which the child denied.
Okeoma, alongside other traders, forcefully intervened and rescued the child, who had sustained severe injuries. Nwachukwu reportedly ordered 10 more lashes to be used on the girl after she had already inflicted injuries. Okeoma immediately alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the police arrived to rescue the child and arrest the suspect.
Victim’s Condition and Response
The injured minor was rushed to a hospital in Owerri for medical treatment due to the severity of the injuries inflicted on her. Okeoma emphasized the importance of pursuing justice for the child, stating that her organization, Stand for Humanity Foundation, would ensure that justice is served to deter future cases of child abuse.
At the police station, Nwachukwu, who later pleaded for mercy, claimed that her anger was triggered by the accusation that the girl had stolen her money. The child, however, denied the theft allegation.
Police Action and Investigation
Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed the arrest and stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has a zero-tolerance policy for child battering and all forms of crimes. Okoye also confirmed that an investigation into the matter has commenced.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about child abuse and the need for strict enforcement of laws to protect vulnerable children from such mistreatment.
