Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has voiced strong disapproval over recent extortion allegations involving police officers across Nigeria. Among the highlighted cases, IGP Egbetokun referenced an incident involving officers from Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where four officers—ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine—allegedly extorted N10 million from local youths.

According to a statement issued on Friday by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the extorted sum has been recovered with assistance from the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 16. The implicated officers are now in detention and are facing an orderly room trial.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, upholds a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and misconduct,” Adejobi stated, emphasizing that each allegation of extortion or abuse of power is taken very seriously. The Inspector General has also assured the public of ongoing investigations into all accusations against officers to ensure accountability and integrity within the force.

In pursuit of transparency and justice, the IGP has mandated stringent penalties for officers found guilty of any form of misconduct, with Adejobi adding, “Severe consequences await any officer, regardless of rank, found to have compromised the Force’s integrity.” The IGP also encouraged citizens to report any complaints through the provided Police helpline and contact channels to assist in holding officers accountable.
