Residents of Ibom in Arochukwu, Abia State, have called on the state government to address escalating insecurity attributed to drug abuse and cult-related violence in their community. The appeal, led by His Royal Highness Mazi Amos Okoro, the traditional ruler of Ibom Etiti and Ibom Isii kindreds, follows recent incidents involving the alleged murder of two community members, Mr. Kboy Okereke and Master Chinedum Ezuma, by suspected cultists.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Mazi Okoro urged the government to curb the sale and consumption of illicit drugs, suggesting that effective control could significantly reduce criminal activities in the area. “The attack and eventual death of Mazi Okereke and Master Ezuma in front of his twin brother was both tragic and undesired,” Okoro stated. “The growing influence of cultism has created an environment where residents, including myself, are uncertain about the safety of our lives and property.”
The monarch highlighted that issues with cultism and violence began well before his tenure, which started in January following the dethronement of his predecessor, Mazi Kanu Nwa-Kanu. He expressed concern over the rise in rape and theft cases, which have left residents in a state of constant fear. “The people want justice, and while all affected individuals are my people, the law must not turn a blind eye to evil. Justice can only be achieved if the roots of cultism are addressed and those responsible, regardless of their status, are held accountable,” Okoro added.
Relatives of the deceased have confirmed the incidents and echoed the community’s call for justice, noting that the incidents have been reported to the police.
