A Hilux van carrying two company workers, including a foreign national, plunged into the Okulu River on Monday night while trying to evade suspected kidnappers on the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle when armed attackers targeted the convoy. The vehicle skidded off the bridge and fell into the river, trapping the occupants.

Rescue Efforts Intensify

As of Tuesday afternoon, the van and its occupants remained submerged in the river, while a multi-agency rescue operation continued. The Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Brian Gokpa, mobilized a rescue team early Tuesday, calling on support from the Nigerian Navy and other rescue agencies. Professional divers and marine police have also been deployed to expedite the recovery mission.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. He commended Gokpa for his swift action in coordinating rescue teams and security forces to address the tragic incident.

Gokpa reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the region. He also pledged to empower additional personnel to assist with the ongoing rescue efforts and vowed to bring the attackers to justice.

Challenges Along the East-West Road

The East-West Road, where the incident occurred, has become increasingly hazardous due to its deteriorating condition and the removal of bridge railings by vandals. These factors have contributed to a rise in kidnappings, accidents, and other criminal activities along the route.

The absence of protective railings on the bridges poses significant risks, particularly in emergencies like this, where vehicles are more prone to skidding off the road.

Police Confirm Incident and Investigations

Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing. “Yes, I can confirm the incident. The Commissioner of Police has visited the scene. Updates will be provided as soon as available,” she said.

Ongoing Search and Rescue Operations

Rescue teams, including professional divers and marine police, are working tirelessly to recover the vehicle and its occupants. Authorities are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and the subsequent accident.

The incident highlights the urgent need for improved security measures and infrastructure along the East-West Road to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of road users.
