A new study revealed that 54% of eyelash extension users reported eye problems. Additionally, weather-related factors contributed to 36.5% of eye disease cases.

The study, “Ocular Side Effects of Eyelash Extension Use Among Female Students of the University of Benin, Edo State,” found a link between eyelash extensions and eye complications.

FRONTPAGE Healthwise previously reported that fixing artificial eyelashes under unsanitary conditions leads to infections. Experts warned that these extensions could cause allergies, swollen eyelids, redness, and dryness.

Everyday Habits That Harm Eye Health

An optometry website, Overnight Glasses, listed six daily habits that significantly damage vision.

Gidon Sadovsky, an optical industry expert, shared insights on how everyday activities affect eye health. He also provided preventive measures for long-term protection.

1. Eyelash Extensions and Eye Irritation

Research on 400 women uncovered disturbing data about eyelash extensions. The most common complications included itching (38%), lash loss (36%), and eye redness (34%).

Additionally, 12% of users admitted to using toxic multipurpose glue, which threatens ocular and respiratory health.

Sadovsky warned that adhesives in eyelash extensions could trigger severe allergic reactions.

2. Indoor Air Quality and Eye Irritation

Studies found that bathroom molds, especially Aspergillus species, release airborne toxins in humid environments.

“These toxins cause persistent eye inflammation and allergic reactions, even at low exposure levels,” Sadovsky stated.

3. Climate Change Increases Eye Health Risks

A study showed that each 1°C rise in temperature increases UV radiation exposure by 2%.

Sadovsky explained that rising temperatures, reduced humidity, and increased pollution create the perfect conditions for eye damage.

“Data shows that weather-related factors contribute to 36.5% of eye disease cases. UV exposure alone increases cataract risks by 10-150% and viral eye infections by 14-33%,” he said.

4. Poor Sleep Hygiene Triggers Eye Infections

Dirty pillowcases harbor bacteria, dust mites, and dead skin cells. Regular contact with contaminated bedding triggers chronic inflammation and recurring infections.

Sadovsky advised washing pillowcases frequently to prevent bacteria from irritating the eyes overnight.

5. Pet Hair Can Scratch the Cornea

An estimated 62% of American households own pets. Many people overlook the eye risks associated with pet hair.

Sleeping with pets or failing to wash hands after pet interactions increases the risk of microscopic corneal abrasions.

The Cleveland Clinic defines corneal abrasions as small scratches on the eye’s clear surface. This injury ranks as the most common form of eye trauma.

6. Eye Drops Can Cause Dependency

Sadovsky warned that frequent use of eye drops creates a dependency cycle known as “rebound redness.”

Long-term use damages blood vessels and may cause serious underlying conditions. He urged people to use eye drops sparingly and seek alternative solutions.

Simple Adjustments Can Preserve Eye Health

Sadovsky emphasized the importance of preventive measures in protecting long-term vision.

“Understanding how daily activities impact eye health allows for better habits. Proper cosmetic use and environmental awareness help maintain lasting ocular health. These small adjustments prevent serious eye conditions,” he advised.

By making mindful choices, people can reduce eye strain, avoid unnecessary risks, and preserve their vision for years.
