The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has reported a bizarre incident in Kuchibuyi Village, Abuja, where a local herbalist, Ismail Usman, sustained critical injuries after attempting to test the effectiveness of a self-made “bulletproof” charm.
According to the FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred on November 23, 2024, when Usman shot himself in the stomach with a shotgun, believing his charm would protect him. Unfortunately, the charm failed, leaving him with severe injuries.
“A distress call from Shandam Michael alerted the police to the incident. Officers from the Byazhin Division responded promptly, finding Usman in critical condition. He was immediately taken to Kubwa General Hospital and later transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for further treatment,” Adeh said.
Recovery of Evidence
During a subsequent search of Usman’s home, police recovered the homemade shotgun and various charms believed to have been used in the experiment. The case has been classified as unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide, with potential charges under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
Police Reaction
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, condemned the incident, emphasizing the risks of illegal firearms and reckless behavior. He called for heightened awareness about the dangers of such practices, urging residents to avoid engaging in life-threatening experiments.
“This situation illustrates the serious risks of engaging in reckless behavior,” Disu said. He encouraged the public to prioritize safety and report suspicious activities to authorities.
Community Vigilance
SP Adeh underscored the importance of community vigilance and mutual responsibility, calling on residents to remain alert and proactive in reporting unusual activities to the police.
As investigations into the incident continue, the police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all FCT residents.
