A wave of terror struck Ifite-Awka in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday night as unidentified gunmen launched an attack, killing at least four people and abducting the manager of a popular hotel. The incident, which occurred around 7 pm, sent residents fleeing for safety and forced traders to abruptly close their shops.
The Attack
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen targeted multiple locations, including:
- Book Foundation Junction
- Ukwu Aki Bus Stop
- “B” Bus Stop
- Commissioners’ Quarters
- The Bamboo Area
During the attack, the gunmen fired sporadically into the air, creating panic in the community. At least three people were reportedly killed at Book Foundation Junction, while another victim was gunned down at Ukwu Aki Bus Stop.
A grocery trader who witnessed the chaos recounted, “It was a tense situation around 7 pm when the gunmen suddenly arrived and started shooting into the air. Everyone panicked and ran for safety. Traders hurriedly locked their shops, and as of today, many shops remain closed.”
Kidnapping and Ransom Demand
The assailants also invaded a hotel in the Commissioners’ Quarters, where they kidnapped the manager and reportedly demanded a ransom for his release. Initially, the gunmen requested ₦20 million, but the amount was later reduced to ₦12 million, according to sources close to the hotel staff.
The manager’s whereabouts remain unknown, and the incident has left residents deeply shaken.
More Fatalities Reported
On Thursday morning, another person was shot dead near the Ukwu Aki area, bringing the total number of fatalities to four. A resident identified as Chibuike described the growing insecurity:
“This December is becoming very bloody. About three people were killed last night—one at ‘B’ Bus Stop and two at Book Foundation Junction. This morning, another person was shot dead. May God have mercy. Everyone should be cautious about their movements.”

The attack has heightened fears in Ifite-Awka, with many residents calling for improved security measures. The streets remain deserted, and businesses are yet to reopen, as the community grapples with the aftermath of the violence.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, acknowledged the incident but refrained from providing detailed comments. “Thank you for this information, but if you know the relatives of these victims, let them come forward, please,” he said.
