A final-year Computer Science student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, identified as Prince, was shot dead by gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday in the Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
The tragic incident occurred in the victim’s residence along Abuja Street, Ikot Osurua community, where the assailants targeted him in his room. Prince, who was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was killed in the presence of his girlfriend.
Attack Details
According to a source within the polytechnic community, the gunmen entered the compound around 1 a.m. and went directly to the victim’s room, shooting him in the stomach.
The source, speaking anonymously, said, “The gunmen didn’t steal anything or rob anyone in the compound. They just shot him and escaped.”
Prince’s girlfriend raised the alarm, drawing the attention of neighbours who quickly rushed him to a hospital. Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead on arrival.
Community in Shock
The incident has left the polytechnic community in shock. A resident recalled seeing the victim just hours before the attack.
“I met him yesterday around 4 p.m. with his girlfriend. They were both wearing facemasks, and we joked about their appearance. He was a popular figure in the neighbourhood and an active member of his church’s choral group. We are all in shock over his death,” the source said.
Police Investigation Underway
The Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom State, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the incident. Preliminary information suggests the attack may be linked to robbery and cult-related activities in the area.
“Information we have indicates that there was a robbery and cult-related operation in the vicinity. The assailants invaded the area and shot the student during the robbery. An investigation is ongoing,” DSP John stated.
