Gunmen Abduct Six People, Including Pregnant Woman, in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State

A series of abductions in Ogwashi-Uku, located in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, has raised alarm, with six people, including a pregnant woman, reported missing within a week.

Details of the Abductions

According to local sources, the spate of kidnappings began on December 23, 2024, when Mr. Welfred Ifeanyichukwu and his pregnant wife were abducted. Tragically, Mr. Ifeanyichukwu was killed by the kidnappers, while his wife was held captive and later released after a ransom of N10 million was paid. Over the course of the following days, from December 23 to January 2, 2025, six individuals were abducted from the community.

Out of the six victims, three were eventually freed after their families paid significant ransoms, while two individuals remain in captivity. Their whereabouts and well-being are currently unknown, leading to heightened anxiety among residents of Ogwashi-Uku.

Community’s Fear and Growing Tension

A source from the community described the situation as increasingly dire, noting that the kidnappings have left the community in fear for their safety. “What we are passing through in Ogwashi-Uku is hell,” the source lamented, adding that the area has become a “danger zone” with the recent abductions. The resident emphasized that the community’s residents now live in constant fear, as they have no assurance of safety for themselves, their families, or their property.

Police Response and Lack of Confirmation

When contacted for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, SP Bright Edafe, denied being aware of the incidents. He suggested that the victims may not have reported the abductions to the police and dismissed the reports as rumors, stating, “Maybe the victims didn’t report. Till now no report. So much rumor can’t be confirmed.”

However, the lack of official acknowledgment has done little to quell the growing concern in Ogwashi-Uku, where residents are now urging authorities to take action and provide security in the area. As the community continues to wait for updates, the fate of the remaining hostages remains uncertain.
