Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced on Thursday that his administration would introduce health palliatives to alleviate the economic difficulties faced by citizens, particularly in rural communities. The governor disclosed that these subsidies on healthcare services and products aim to ease the burden of rising costs, especially for pharmaceutical items.

Speaking at the 2023 Community Day Celebration, organized by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs at the Police College grounds in Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu emphasized his government’s commitment to providing continuous support to citizens across all areas of Lagos State, including the most remote communities.

“We understand the growing cost of pharmaceutical products in the country, and just as we have offered subsidies on transportation and food, we will extend palliatives to medicines as well. We will not leave any community behind,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The event’s theme, ‘Community Engagement: A Veritable Tool for Infrastructure Development in Rural Communities’, highlighted the importance of grassroots involvement in development efforts. The governor praised the communities for their contributions to local development and assured them that his administration would continue to prioritize their needs.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje, expressed gratitude to local council development areas (LCDAs) for their self-help projects, which have supported the government’s broader efforts to deliver essential services to the state’s residents.

Sanwo-Olu’s announcement of healthcare palliatives comes in response to the rising cost of living and forms part of a broader strategy to provide relief through various sectors, such as transport, food, and now healthcare.
