During Rivers State University’s (RSU) 35th convocation ceremony, Governor Siminalayi Fubara committed to providing financial and infrastructural support to elevate the university’s standing as one of Nigeria’s top institutions. Addressing attendees at the Convocation Arena in Port Harcourt, Fubara emphasized the state’s commitment to education as a foundation for societal progress, noting that despite funding challenges, education remains a priority in Rivers State.
Governor Fubara applauded RSU’s leadership under Vice Chancellor Prof. Nlerum Okogbule for securing full accreditation for all 24 university programs and announced that a delayed grant would be released by December 18, 2023. He highlighted additional initiatives, including substantial budget allocations for 2024, which will support campus expansions, improve infrastructure like stable power supply and student housing, and enhance campus security with CCTV installations.
Prof. Okogbule shared that 6,326 students were graduating with degrees across various levels, and enrollment capacities for medicine, nursing, and midwifery programs had been expanded. Chancellor Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, also urged increased funding for research-driven higher education to address Nigeria’s developmental needs.
