Governor Akeredolu Urges Ondo Youth to View Education as a Path to Liberation, Not Just Employment

Rotimi-Akeredolu, Governor of Ondo state

During this year’s International Student Day celebration at Ondo’s International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome), Governor Rotimi Akeredolu called on the youth to embrace education as a transformative tool for liberation rather than solely a means to employment. Represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Bamidele Ologun, Akeredolu stressed that education should inspire innovation, self-reliance, and societal contributions that tackle national challenges. He emphasized the importance of the youth remaining engaged and hopeful, as they represent Nigeria’s future and potential for progress.

Governor Akeredolu encouraged students to adopt a mindset that values creativity, noting, “Education, when seen as a liberating force, allows you to be creators of employment and societal stewards who contribute positively.” He assured the government’s continued support for youth-driven initiatives, adding that “the glory of the nation rests upon the youth.”

Minister of State for Youth Ayodele Olawande also spoke on government initiatives to reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), aiming to ensure that graduates have post-service engagement opportunities. He shared that efforts are underway to incorporate diverse skills programs into the NYSC scheme, linking youth to opportunities in agriculture, technology, entertainment, and sports.

Vice-Chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, represented by Dr. Daniel Adekeye, delivered a lecture titled “Embracing Failure: The Power of the First Attempt in Learning and Growing.” Prof. Ologunorisa urged students to see failures as stepping stones for growth rather than setbacks. He encouraged youth to take responsibility for their future, actively seek solutions, and reject apathy and despair. Emphasizing resilience, he urged students to adopt fresh perspectives, learn from mistakes, and strive for a Nigeria that aligns with the visionary ideals of past leaders.
