Google Assistant Evolves into Gemini: What to Expect

Google Assistant is transitioning into Gemini, bringing new AI capabilities but also discontinuing some familiar features. If you use Google Assistant to set timers, play music, or control your smart home, be prepared for some disruptions. The nine-year-old assistant is being replaced by the more powerful AI-driven Gemini chatbot. This article outlines the key changes and what you can expect during the transition.

Gemini: A Significant Upgrade

Gemini marks a major upgrade over Google Assistant. It uses AI-powered large language models (LLMs), making it more conversational and capable of handling more complex tasks. While you’ll still be able to chat with Gemini like you do with Google Assistant, its responses will be more personalized and tailored specifically to you.

Transition to Gemini Begins with Smartphones

Google has already started the transition to Gemini, with smartphones being the first to adopt it. Over the next few months, other devices like smart speakers, TVs, wearables, and cars will follow. By the end of 2025, most smartphones will have fully transitioned to Gemini. At that point, “the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads,” according to Google.
