Gombe State Deputy Governor, Manassah Jatau, has raised concerns over the frequent portrayal of black magic in Nigerian films, especially those depicting Igbo culture. He observed that the media’s focus on supernatural elements, often characterized as juju, overshadows the positive aspects of Igbo traditions, such as their strong work ethic and dedication to cultural values.
The deputy governor voiced these concerns on Tuesday while meeting with the newly appointed Executive Council of the Igbo Community in Gombe State. Jatau emphasized that the Igbo people’s commitment to industry and positive societal contributions—such as their work in building materials and automobile industries across Nigeria—offers significant cultural value that filmmakers should highlight. He noted that these values contribute to their adaptability and meaningful impact in diverse communities.
Jatau expressed his desire to see Nigerian films reflect the dignity of labor and positive cultural attributes. “The depiction of Igbo culture as solely reliant on magic needs to be re-evaluated. It’s essential to promote values that reinforce the traditions of respect and cooperation among the youth, which help maintain social order and community spirit,” he stated.
The deputy governor commended the Igbo community in Gombe for their contributions to peace and development in the state, acknowledging their role in fostering unity and coexistence. He highlighted the industrious nature of the Igbo, encouraging them to impart these values to other ethnic groups to counteract laziness and foster societal growth.
In response, the President-General of the Igbo Community in Gombe State, Dr. Egwu Wabs, introduced the newly appointed executive council members and expressed the community’s eagerness to partner with the state government in promoting economic growth. Wabs affirmed, “The Igbo community is committed to continuing its partnership with the Gombe State government to drive development and prosperity for all residents.”
The dialogue reflects Gombe State’s commitment to enhancing cross-cultural understanding and fostering a more balanced representation of Nigerian heritage in media.
