Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni (retd.), former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has passed away at the age of 82. Useni, a revered military officer and politician, died on Thursday after battling a prolonged illness.
The news of his passing was confirmed by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang through a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
Governor Mutfwang Pays Tribute
Governor Mutfwang expressed profound sorrow over Useni’s death, describing it as a significant loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation. He praised Useni for his exemplary leadership, commitment to public service, and efforts to promote peace and security across Plateau State and northern Nigeria.
“The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, deeply regrets to announce to the citizens of Plateau State and all patriotic Nigerians the passing of the former minister,” the statement read.
A Lifetime of Service
Useni’s career spanned decades of service to Nigeria in both military and civilian capacities. In the military, he served as Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. He later served as the Minister of Transport and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, where he left a significant mark on national development.
After retiring from the military, Useni transitioned into politics, becoming Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2015, he was elected as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Mutfwang highlighted Useni’s selfless service and dedication to his community, noting that his contributions to the military, politics, and Plateau State would not be forgotten.
